The Wife's Ghost

In Wilson county in eastern North Carolina there is a ghost story of an old man so miserly that it is said his wife came back from the grave to take back her possessions. No names are known nor the exact location where this took place. But the story is this:

A wealthy man who achieved his wealth by spending no more than he had to was married(in a very modest wedding I'm sure). Unfortunately, it wasn't long before his wife became ill and passed away. Those who dealt with the man wondered if it was because he was too cheap to pay a doctor or for medicine. Anyway, it was at his wife's funeral that his penny pinching went over the top. In front of the mourners in the church, he walked up to the open coffin and removed all of his dead wifes jewelry before the lid was shut and she was buried.

The people were horrified, how could he desecrate the memory of his wife like that. Before long, he had wed another young lady and had 'recycled' the wedding band from his previous wife. One night not long after the ceremony, the bride was awakened by someone tugging at her finger. She opened her eyes and saw the very angry ghost of the man's first wife pulling at the ring on the young girls finger.

So be careful young ladies, and be sure when you are given a ring, you are the FIRST owner.

I, being the insane one, attempted to approach the figure. I got a foot within the figure and she disappeare...

During the days of the Revolutionary War, the famed British military commander Lord Cornwallis was chasing the American General Nathanial Greene across North Carolina. In order to catch his elusive prey, Lord Cornwallis ordered that all expendable supplies be burned in an attempt to lighten their load and make their movements faster. Only salt, medicine, silver and gold, and ammunition survived....

It is said that from almost the earliest times to the present, strange things happen in those woods...Usually in hauntings you have one ghost or phenomena in a given area. The story of Lydia, Greensboro's Vanishing Hitchhiker is one of the most popular ghost stories in North Carolina lore ranking right up there with the Brown Mountain Lights and The Devils Tramping Ground. Unlike those hauntings though, Lydia seems to have a basis firmly in fact....
