The Haunting Music of Roan Mountain
One of the hauntings in North Carolina that has people talking is also one of the most mysterious. On the peak known as Roan mountain between the border of North Carolina and Tennessee is a phenomena known to some as "The Ghostly Choir of Roan Mountain", others refer to it as the angels of Roan mountain and others still call it "The Devil's Choir of Roan Mountain". While they all mean the same thing for our purposes today we'll refer to it as "The Haunting Music of Roan Mountain".
The Ghostly music has been heard on Roan Mountain well before the white man has been in America. The Catawba tribe was said to challenge the other tribes in the area to battles that were so bloody and gory that the rhododendron at the edge of the bald bloom bright red.
There seems to be a difference of opinion on what the music sounds like. Some people claim it's the sound of angels rehearsing singing for the end of the world. other's claim that no one who'd heard the sound would claim that it was angels. To them the sound is horrible. Like an animal caught in a hunters trap. One brave soul set out to find the origin of the music, only to fall and be knocked out. during his unscheduled nap, the boy dreamed of a horrid choir of ghosts, ghouls and demons floating in the air singing down to him. The boy thinks he was asleep, but was he?
Whatever the source of the music it can still be heard after a storm. Which some claim is accompanied by a circular rainbow... but that's a tale for another day.

The rocks are magnetic and put off an eerie sound!!! I live in Roan mtn and am a biologist... cool story but explainable
My Mom was born and raised in Bakersville and spent a lot of time up there. Does anyone know what part of the mountain this is usually heard at?
Simple explanation for it, I live very close to Roan Mountain and was originally from there. The ghostly music you hear is nothing more than the wind going through the balsams. It is becoming less and less because there is a parasite attacking the balsams on the Roan, most of the older growth balsams are now dead and decaying. You can hear the "hum" standing nearer to the trees on the grassy knoll near the huckleberry bushes. Now, the scarier truly ghostly apparition is the Brown Mountain Lights. I've seen them, there is no explanation for them, they do not make sense, I've shown other people, strange things happen there, it's just creepy. Google the place and check it out. You MUST go there on a clear night, you can only see them around midnight or later and the later it gets the higher on the mountain the lights go. Sometimes they shoot over your head, just be prepared.
